PPWR: EU NEWS AND FACTS ABOUT ARTICLE 6

Case studies 16.01.2025

PPWR (Packaging and Packaging Waste Regulation) - This regulation has the potential to fundamentally change the rules for packaging and packaging waste across the EU. What does it mean in practice?

👉 Stricter design and manufacturing requirements: Packaging should be more recyclable, made from less material and ideally from recycled sources
👉Supporting the circular economy: the EU wants to reuse more packaging and significantly increase recycling rates
👉Extended Producer Responsibility (EPR): companies will be financially and logistically responsible for the packaging they put on the market - so we believe that less air transport (e.g. Less air transport (thanks to BOX48 's 1-piece boxes CZ,SK,AT,DE,PL) and minimum possible packaging sizes (thanks to BOXOLLO.COM) make sense
👉 Harmonisation across Member States.
Yes - currently conflicting national directives could make it easier for packagers and manufacturers.

Strict criteria for recyclable packaging
According to Article 6 of the PPWR, all packaging placed on the market must be recyclable - i.e. it must be able to be collected, sorted and processed into secondary raw materials. Recyclability rates will be assessed according to performance classes (A, B or C) and from 2030 only packaging that meets these criteria will be allowed on the market. From 2038 onwards, only packaging in classes A or B will be allowed on the market.

To reduce the negative environmental impact of single-use plastics, the Regulation restricts selected items, including:
🍎 Pre-packaged fruit and vegetables weighing less than 1.5 kg.
🥡 Food and beverage packaging for direct consumption in hotels, bars and restaurants.
🛍️Jednorázové condiment bags or small toiletry bottles commonly used in accommodation services.
🛍️Velmi lightweight plastic bags often used when buying loose goods at markets.

What impacts can we expect?
🟢Company investments in new technologies and changes in logistics await (again, our BOXOLLO.COM can help with the calculations)
🟢Consumers will get clearer information about sorting and there will be more pressure to produce greener packaging - single component packaging, maximum recycling rates, smart designs
🟢The environment will be less burdened by plastics
