Packung Akademie Demonstrated Why a Packaging Line Is Key to Efficient Logistics

Many companies invest in warehouse automation, robotic order picking, or modern WMS systems. Yet they often overlook one crucial part of the entire process—order packaging. The result is a situation where the warehouse can prepare orders faster than they can be packaged and shipped.

This was precisely the topic addressed at this year’s Packung Akademie, which took place on July 31, 2026, in Horní Věstonice. The gathering of experts in logistics, packaging technology, and automation demonstrated that truly effective logistics can only be achieved when all processes—from goods receipt to shipping—are seamlessly integrated.

Automation Must Address the Entire Process

The program was kicked off by the event’s main partner, KVADOS. Miroslav Hampel highlighted a problem that many companies are facing today.

Investments in warehouse automation are often directed primarily toward speeding up order picking. However, if the packaging process remains manual or under-resourced, a new bottleneck will arise right at the warehouse exit.

In other words, increasing warehouse throughput alone is not enough. True efficiency is achieved only when the following are integrated:

• WMS and ERP systems,

• automated decision-making regarding packaging type,

• packaging production,

• packaging technology,

• transportation and shipping.

BOXOLLO: Software That Selects the Best Packaging Method

One of the main topics was a presentation of the BOXOLLO system, which automatically suggests the optimal way to package an order.

Based on the dimensions, weight, and other parameters of the goods, the software can:

• suggest the most suitable shipping box,

• minimize the amount of empty space,

• reduce the use of packing materials,

• optimize shipping costs,

• and take into account the requirements of individual carriers.

The result is not only savings in packaging material, but also more efficient logistics and lower costs for each shipment.

When does automation really pay off?

One of the most interesting parts of the program was the methodology for assessing the return on investment of packaging process automation.

Automation is not just a matter of company size. The following factors are particularly decisive:

• the number of shipments dispatched,

• product range variability,

• shipping speed requirements,

• labor costs,

• the amount of packaging used,

• and integration capabilities with existing systems.

A specific example was used to demonstrate a combination of technologies that showed how a properly designed solution can significantly increase shipping capacity while simultaneously reducing operating costs.

News from the Coesia Group

The program also featured the Coesia Group’s latest technologies.

The following systems were highlighted in particular:

• Selecta – automatic packaging into paper bags,

• Eleva – intelligent modular carton height adjustment.

Both technologies respond to the current trend toward reducing the amount of packaging material used and making more efficient use of shipping space.

Tour of the Packung Logistics Center

Participants then toured Packung’s logistics center.

The following were presented during the tour:

• a warehouse with a capacity of approximately 5,500 pallet spaces,

• mobile racking systems,

• integration with WMS and ERP,

• external warehousing operations,

• Panotec packaging lines for the production of custom-made boxes.

Visitors were able to see in detail how the individual technologies are integrated into a single functional logistics unit.

Digital printing and automatic shipment measurement

The program also included a demonstration of digital printing in the CMYK color space and a presentation of the DWS measuring station.

It can automatically:

• measure the dimensions of a shipment,

• weigh the product,

• transfer data to other systems without manual intervention.

The automatic collection of this data significantly speeds up the entire shipping process and eliminates errors caused by manual data entry.

The future of logistics lies in the integration of technologies

Packung Akademie has once again confirmed that modern logistics is not about individual machines, but about their interconnection.

The greatest benefits come from solutions that can integrate:

• warehouse management,

• automated packaging decisions,

• custom packaging production,

• robotic handling,

• digital printing,

• inspection and measurement technologies,

• shipping.

It is precisely the integration of all these components that enables companies to increase performance, reduce costs, and prepare their logistics for further growth.
