About BOX48 01.04.2020

HOW TO EASILY NAVIGATE THE PACKAGING 'LINGO'?

This is a question that many aspiring e-shop owners ask themselves. So we thought we'd create an explanatory glossary to make it easy to understand the meaning of each term. If you're wondering what 'die-cutting tool' or 'flap box' means, this article is for you.

BIG (OHYB)

The big or bend (push through) of the cardboard is where it needs to be bent - usually 90-180°. This element of the box is done from the inside of the product using a creasing wheel, either longitudinally along the direction of the corrugated cardboard wave or transversely. Due to the quality of the inner paper board, damage to the box is possible, but this damage does not affect the quality of the box as such.

IMPORTANT INFORMATION

In the BOX48.CZ production system, the so-called bigs appear even in places that are not 'necessary' for the construction of the box, but this element is randomly placed around the box thanks to the endless cardboard production system.

FLAP BOXES VS. JIGSAW PUZZLES

The most common type of box in the world is the FEFCO 0201 - a flap box, i.e. packaging that eliminates waste as much as possible during production, but must be stapled/bonded.

'Folding boxes', i.e. boxes without joints, are easy to fold but more bulky in terms of material, unlike the paper flap box.

ENDLESS CARDBOARD

Endless board (Fanfold) is a three- or five-layer corrugated board that is not in rolls or sections, but stacked in one piece on a pallet in the form of an 'accordion'. The fold (or big, which we write about in this article) is always regularly in 1143mm increments. The width of the cardboard stacked in this way can be from 200-2460mm, depending on the chosen thickness of the 2-6mm cardboard it can be between 300-1000 running metres on a pallet. The endless cardboard can also be printed with endlessly repeating graphics in the form of logos, lettering, character cuts etc.

CARDBOARD PRINTING

Printing of paper boxes can be realized by technology according to the required quantity of boxes production. The largest share of larger series (min. 1000pcs) of box production is printing by flexo printing, gravure printing and offset printing. For smaller series screen printing is still used and the modern way of multi-colour printing is InJet technology.

PRINTING TECHNIQUES

  • FLEXOTISK - Printing ink is applied directly to the printed material from the surface of an elastic mould (usually photopolymer)
  • DUMP PRINTING - The printing form is embossed, so the printing surfaces are below the level of the non-printing surfaces
  • OFFSET PRINTING - Offset printing belongs to the category of indirect surface printing because its printing and non-printing areas are at the same height level, unlike other printing principles.
  • INKJET PRINTING - Ink is transferred to paper or other print media non-contact

BOX DIMENSIONS

The stated dimensions of all boxes are always internal, the box should not be smaller than the specified dimensions. Dimensions are given in millimetres. Internal dimensions depend on the quality of the composition, External dimensions with regard to the number of different combinations of cardboard thickness, construction, etc. must be calculated on demand.

STACKING ON A PALLET

We recommend using one of the keys below so that the boxes can be stacked on a pallet and the full area of the EURO pallet (1200 x 800 mm) can be used. Alternatively, contact a specialist who will design the correct layout taking into account the variables of product weight, number of boxes per pallet, destination, fixing of goods to the pallet, external protection of boxes, protection of corners and edges, etc.

CORRUGATED BOARD

The quality of multi-layer corrugated board is determined by several factors.

  • Type of corrugated board (number of layers, size of wool)
  • material of each layer
  • technology used
  • time and environmental factors

The adhesives on the market are available in 2-3-5 and 7 layers. The cardboard is then constructed from different types of wool = size of this wool A, B, C, E, F, etc. The BOX48.cz system offers three-layer B and five-layer board in the EB wave combination. The strength of the corrugated board also depends on the quality of the paper used:

  • Testliner is a multi-ply paper made from recycled material, the proportion of pulp is not specified. The basis weight of the paper is 120-200g/m2. Compared to kraft paper, it is more cost-effective. It has a lower resistance to puncture or tearing.
  • Kraftliner is the highest quality paper used as a cover layer. It is made with a minimum of 80% kraft pulp from newly manufactured material - not recycled paper. The weight of the paper is 115-440 g/m2.
  • Schrenz (grey paper) is the lowest quality paper made from mixed waste paper with a weight of 70-140 g/m2.
  • Wellenstoff is a corrugated pulp made from high quality waste paper. The required strength values can then be achieved by using various additives. The proportion of woolenstock reaches over 38 percent.

What type of paper is used by BOX48.cz

We use the highest quality top cover layer of kraftliner.

The corrugated board formulas have different code designations and it is advisable to consult a specialist who takes into account other decisive factors when choosing the appropriate type of board:

  • Edge strength of ECT [kN/m] maximum force at which the measured sample breaks (collapses).
  • Compressive face strength FCT [kPA] maximum pressure at which the corrugated board is compressed in the face.
  • BERSTDRUCKcompressive strength [kPA] the maximum pressure at which the corrugated board is forced through the surface.
  • BCT compressive strength [kN] the maximum force that thepackaging can withstand before breaking

CUTTING TOOLS

HOW TO CHOOSE THE TECHNOLOGY?

For mass production of paper boxes, die-cutting in the form of a rotary cylinder or plate is used. Smaller series are cut on a plotter. The Panotec technologies used to produce our boxes are a combination of these technologies. Thus, it is possible to produce products from a single piece without an input load on the die-cutting tools, but we are unable to make a different cutting angle/big angle than 90°.
