DIY TIP: 5 tips for custom printing boxes and packaging

About BOX48 09.10.2020

Printing or labelling of boxes and shipping containers is an important part of packaging management. There is a plethora of printing options on the market - from simple technical number marking to full-size prints. Marking is also a frequent topic on our website in connection with the printing of boxes and other packaging material.

At BOX48.cz we offer printing of boxes from 1000 pcs or 500m2 of cardboard, which is too big for many of you. We have reviewed the market offer for you and prepared recommendations for different printing methods.

  • Printing cardboard with a hand stamp
  • Marking with an inkjet printer
  • Product marking with stickers
  • Cooperation with a local printing agency
  • Unusual and interesting marking techniques and possibilities

What does MARKING mean? Product marking (industrial marking) means the application of a logo, brand text, or entity marking to the surface of a product or merchandise to carry informational or promotional value. Marking can be done by direct marking, printing, application of labels and tags, or by automation.
Hand stamping

Getting a traditional stamp is the easiest multi-purpose solution, which you can even arrange on the spot in larger cities. This solution is suitable for cartons, kraft paper and absorbent surfaces. You can choose from several types of stamps commonly available on the market:

  • Text stamps - these are suitable for simple text markings and are commonly available with the option of adding ink. The sturdier metal stamps add comfort for regular marking.
  • Text plates (plates) - if you need to add graphics to the text, we recommend using rectangular or oval predefined patterns.
  • Pocket stamps - used if you are often in the field and need to mark quickly with a less structured stamp. In the offer of various eshops you can find a version of a simple pocket stamp with a flip-out punch (Pocket stamp), a round pocket stamp with a computer mouse-shaped ejection lid (Stamp mouse) or an unconventional combination of a pen and a stamp.

Eco-friendly stamps

Do you care about the environmental dimension of your activities? Then consider whether it might be advantageous for you to try eco-stamps (in the form of a rotary printing plate when pressed with a lever from the top). With such stamps (which are mostly self-inking) you are assured of 65-80% recycled materials. It is important to check that the stamps comply with ISO 14044 (Environmental management - Life cycle assessment).

Antibacterial stamps suitable for workplaces with a high emphasis on eliminating the spread of disease

If you work where you cannot afford to increase the risk of spreading infection (for example, hospitals and workplaces where there is contact with suspected COVID-19), you can invest in increased protection for you and your customers. For example, these stamps have Microban antibacterial protection, which eliminates the development of bacterial cultures.

Think about the type of surface you will use the stamp on. If you decide to print on a kraft paper surface so that your graphics do not bleed, we do not recommend using stamps without dipping pads. These stamps have a different ink formulation that can unpleasantly mess up your results.

Marking with an inkjet printer

Marking with an Ink - Jet printer is ideal for reliable marking of small to medium batches. This marking is flexible and smudge-resistant at no additional cost. Mobile Ink-Jet printers are then portable and ready for easy integration at any point in the production chain.

Inkjet marking is even bigger and easier here. The mobile jetStamp 1025 allows fast and individual printing on your products or documents up to a print height of 25 mm (1'). The development has placed special emphasis on the print offer. The jetStamp 1025 marking unit can store many forms on the microSD card that is in the device.

Marks mobile when the device is moving around the product, or stationary when the product is moving around the device. In addition to numbers, date, time and text, it also prints graphics and barcodes. Using MP ink, it can print on non-absorbent surfaces such as metal and plastic.

Product marking with a sticker

You can also create your own custom sticker on one of the many servers, where you can just enter the graphic (or you can have a graphic design made for free). The sticker will then be produced either by printing or cutting. Production is often possible from just one piece and the application is easy and very fast.

Cooperation with a local print agency

If you can find a company, tradesman or agency in your area with whom you can agree on a long-term cooperation, this is definitely a smart choice. Your supplier has your printing plates, stamps or stencils in stock, and you therefore benefit from the long-term economies of scale of your production. When it comes to printing larger quantities, you choose one of the traditional printing methods. Let's take a look at the technologies you can request from your supplier for printing your goods.

Printing of boxes in minimum quantities

Local advertising agencies are very well equipped and ready to handle printing of even smaller jobs. The input costs are the graphic materials and the cost of producing the stamps, plates and dies for printing your goods.

Screen printing

  • Quality printing on a wide range of materials from cardboard to plastic to foam
  • Inks resistant to adverse mechanical and weather conditions
  • Various optical or haptic effects can be created that are not possible with other technologies

Tampon printing

  • High-quality printing
  • Ideal wherever it is necessary to print irregular shapes
  • A special variant of gravure printing where the ink is transferred through a silicone carrier called a swab
  • Multiple colours can be printed

Laser printing (engraving)

  • Precise and high quality printing
  • Suitable for repeated serial marking
  • Printing of all promotional materials on various surfaces (plastic, metal, paper)
  • Speed of implementation

Traditional printing technology for boxes from 1000 pcs / 500m2

In the printing techniques used for printing packaging from different types of packaging materials, flexo printing represents the largest share (more than 50%), followed by gravure printing (more than 30%) and offset printing (more than 10%). The remaining 10% is represented by screen printing, indirect printing from above and other printing
printing techniques (foil stamping, pad printing and jet printing). We will introduce all these technologies in turn.

Flexographic printing - printing from height

  • The flexible photopolymer printing form enables printing of all types of paper, cardboard, cartons, including corrugated boards
  • Variability of printing dimensions in longitudinal and transverse production direction when printing web materials
  • Fast drying inks (heat, UV curing)
  • Good print quality with correct preparation
  • Printing of rolls and sheets possible

Offset printing - surface printing

  • Allows indirect printing of cover layers
printing of microwavable cartons, printing of covers for coated carton production, printing of paper sheets for the production of flat bags with demanding graphics
  • Low costs for the production of offset printing plates
  • Possibility of coating directly in the machine

Gravure printing - printing from depth

  • Stable printing technology with excellent print quality
  • Only for materials with smooth and closed surfaces
  • Ideal for marking plastic and metal foils
  • The disadvantage is the high cost of producing the print rollers

Unusual and interesting marking techniques and possibilities

Where conventional marking and printing methods end, creativity begins. If you want your brand to be truly original on some of your products, try one of the following options:

  • Hot stamping - Hot stamping dies are suitable for marking and branding in wood, leather, plastics. The technology uses the possibility of hot stamping on the surface to create an internal relief
  • Cut spray stencils - Any advertising studio is able to prepare a stencil in the form of a cut graphic based on your design, and you can then mark your brand motif on any at least partially absorbent surface with a classic spray.
