7 tips to improve safety when transporting boxes

About BOX48 30.04.2024

The boom of domestic carriers has literally exploded in the past year. For example, the number of shipments transported in 2023 by Packeta Holding reached almost 106 million. (Source PACKETA.COM) A huge number of shipments are lost or damaged in the shipping of boxes every year. Shippers often sin on preparation when shipping and then unfortunately have complicated disputes with the carrier.

How do shippers feel about the whole thing? Often the clause 'The principal(sender) is obliged to ensure that the shipment is properly packed and protected by the packaging so that it is not damaged in transit and other handling. Proper packing shall be deemed to include the necessity of securing the consignment inside the package against movement.' The shipper should be aware that packages are handled on conveyors and are often transferred between depots and vehicles. Security is therefore of the utmost importance - if you want your shipment to arrive safely.

In this article, we would like to show you 7 practical steps and measures that can significantly improve the security of your shipments when transported by a carrier.

1. The box you want to unpack it with

Choosing a good quality and sturdy box is essential. Prefer boxes made of double or triple layered cardboard, which can better withstand the impact and load during handling.

At BOX48, we recommend using basic shipping boxes where you can specify either exact dimensions or dimensions increased by the space of the inner filling.

Examples of customized box types:

You choose the dimensions of the boxes and production at BOX48 takes 48 hours in working days.

Examples of cardboard types:

  • 3VVL🟤B (370g/m2) - Testliner type, thickness 3mm, board composition: 120g/m² Testliner , 100g/m² Wellenstoff, 120g/m² Testliner
  • 3VVL🟤B (410g/m2) - Kraftliner type, 3mm thickness, board composition: 120g/m² Testliner , 100g/m² Wellenstoff, 140g/m² Testliner
  • 5VVL🟤BE (640g/m2)- Kraftliner type, 4mm thickness, board composition: 120g/m² Kraftliner, 120g/m² Wellenstoff, 100g/m² Schrenz, 120g/m² Wellenstoff, 120g/m² Testliner
  • 5VVL🟤BC (680g/m2) - Krafliner type, 6mm thickness, board composition: 135g/m² Kraftliner, 100g/m² Wellenstoff, 90g/m² Wellenstoff, 100g/m² Wellenstoff, 130g/m² Testliner
  • 3VVL⚪E (405g/m2) - Kraftliner type, thickness 1,3mm, board composition: 140g/m² Kraftliner, 100g/m² Wellenstoff, 140g/m² Kraftliner

In general, a simple rule of thumb when selecting cardboard is that for lightweight goods, 3VVL is usually sufficient, but where there is a heavier load, choose 5VVL. However, for more information, you can check our Advice Centre.

Note: VVL = number + number of layers

2. Fillings - a good servant but a bad master

Ensure that the items inside the box are firmly seated and cannot move freely. Use bubble wrap, styrofoam chips or crumpled paper to absorb shock and prevent damage to the contents.

If you need to ship larger quantities, it pays to use automation - such as an air cushion machine, quick fill packing stations, stretchers, staplers or carton shredders. The full range can be found here: https://www.box48.cz/en/tools-and-machines-for-packaging/.

3. Stronger, more stable and safer thanks to strapping

Use high quality adhesive tape to secure the box lid and strengthen the overall box structure. Many types are available on the market depending on the type of adhesive (HOTMELT, AKRYL) or the material - such as paper tape. https://www.box48.cz/en/adhesive-tapes/  Also apply tape to all joints and openings to prevent them from opening during transport.

4. Better treatment through labelling? It's up to you

Each box should be clearly and legibly labelled. Include the address of both the sender and the recipient and include phone numbers in case of need. Don't forget special warnings such as 'Fragile' or 'Top side up'.

5. Choosing a carrier is a choice that affects everything

Choose a carrier with a good reputation for customer service and delivery reliability. Look for reviews and experiences of other clients. Also pay attention to whether the carrier is capable of delivering both piece and pallet quantities. If not you will have to report 2 types of shipments, which requires more coordination.

6. Shipment tracking - less work for you

Prefer a carrier that offers real-time shipment tracking. This allows you to see where your shipment is at any time and whether there are any complications.

7. Insure your shipment

Consider parcel insurance, especially for expensive or fragile items. Insurance can provide you with additional protection and compensation in the event of loss or damage.

Securing boxes for shipping is not complicated, but it does require consistency and attention to detail. By choosing the right materials, packing carefully and selecting a reliable carrier, you can greatly reduce the risk of damage or loss to your shipments. Safe shipping is an investment in your customers' satisfaction and your company's reputation.
