7 tips for using adhesive tapes

How to? 16.03.2021

A good choice and quality adhesive tape means a reliable package. The basic factor for the selection of adhesive tape is not only the substrate material, but also the environmental conditions in which the tape is applied, the subsequent resistance to temperature or UV radiation during storage, the degree and speed of adhesion and the ease of application. Let's take a look at the range of adhesive tapes from the most common acrylic tapes to the highly adhesive and durable hotmelt tapes to solvent adhesive tapes for application in extreme conditions.

How to choose adhesive tape for gluing cartons?

To begin with, it is important to understand what surface layer you are gluing the cardboard to - the cardboard used to make cardboard has different weights, widths and types. For information on corrugated cardboard, see the article 'Why is cardboard the best packaging material?'. The parameters that we should address are mainly adhesion and tear away from the cardboard. For basic types of cartonboard, e.g. testliner, the adhesion is standard to high with no signs of tearing. For details on the types of cartons, see the article 'Getting to know packaging and packaging material'. At higher weights and quality, then, adhesion can be maximum and high tack tape can even damage the paper layer.

Overview of adhesive tapes by application

TIP 1 : Big boxes

For use on larger sized boxes and products, HOTMELT adhesive tape is suitable - a wide transparent adhesive tape that ensures a comfortable and secure closure of the paper box.

The HOTMELT adhesive is composed of synthetic rubber and has the advantage over acrylic adhesives of instant adhesion even at low temperatures, so it can be easily handled even in unheated warehouses at temperatures of around 15-21°C and the sealed shipment can be moved afterwards even in sub-zero temperatures.

An extremely strong bond is formed at the point of sealing with HOTMELT adhesive tape, which can only be broken with visible damage to the box.

TIP 2 : Universal use

If you're looking for a tape for less demanding environments with universal use, try the most common type of AKRYL tape for easy application.

Water-based acrylic adhesive is also the most environmentally friendly option of all the adhesives used in duct tape. It achieves the highest adhesion within a few hours, however the bond life is then high. The acrylic adhesive also has high UV resistance and does not dry out. However, beware of too low temperatures - the recommended range for trouble-free use is 5-45°C.

TIP 3 : More grip

Wherever a higher adhesion is required than HOTMELT and AKRYL adhesive tapes, we recommend using a tape with a higher micro-load. In the case of BIO SOLVENT adhesive tape, the total film thickness including adhesive is 43mm. The solvent adhesive used is composed of natural rubber and resin. It is well applied at temperatures in the range of 15-20°C, however it provides a high quality bond resistant to low and high temperatures from -30°C to 70°C. It therefore forms an instantly strong bond on any material, even in dusty, oily or humid environments. Solvent adhesive tape cannot be peeled off without visible marks on the box. The resistance of Solvent Adhesive is reduced by exposure to strong UV light or chemicals.

TIP 4 : Industrial packaging

Müroll industrial box assembly adhesive tapes are suitable for more demanding gluing applications. The HOTMELT adhesive used in this tape is suitable for temperatures below 10 °C. The branded adhesive tapes are then guaranteed:

  • the highest quality adhesives
  • a strong, tear-resistant carrier
  • durability in harsh conditions such as frost, humidity and dust
  • Application to a wide range of materials
  • integrity of the adhesive tape roll

TIP 5 : Tape application speed

HAVANA is a classic brown acrylic adhesive tape suitable for less demanding environments suitable for application with manual box closers. The rigid carrier eliminates the risk of tape tearing during application. Havana adhesive tape creates a reliable bond on any cardboard substrate and is used to close even larger and heavier boxes.

TIP 6 : Paper tape

Kraft paper tape with a high quality adhesive can be made in the same colour as your bespoke box. Highly adhesive adhesive tape for an unbreakable bond. A significant advantage is the safety of the paper tape and theease of recycling the packaging after use, as there is no need to separate plastic and paper. It is suitable for bonding lighter and medium weight cardboard boxes. Paper tape allows easy application and can be written on and stamped well compared to other tapes. CAUTION - Damage to the carton is visible when the tape is removed.

TIP 7 : Shaping

Use filament tape to easily reinforce packaging wherever it needs to hold its shape. It is used as reinforcement for lids and bottoms of customized boxes. It is very strong, adhesive and tear resistant. The strength of the filament adhesive tape is due to the longitudinal glass fibre reinforcement. Even higher strength is provided by the cross-linked filament tape. Additional advantages are waterproofness and partial UV resistance.
